A power transformer is an electrical device used to transmit electrical power from one circuit to another without making any change in the frequency. It transmits electrical power between generators and distribution primary circuits. It can step-up or step-down the voltage in the distribution network to suit the needs of the end user.
Power transformers work on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction which is the working principle for all transformers, inductors, motors, and generators. This law states that when a closed loop is brought near a fluctuating magnetic field, an electromotive force will be generated all across the system. The magnetic flux produced by the primary winding passes through a ferromagnetic core to be transmitted effectively to a secondary winding. The magnetic flux will then induce an electromotive force in the secondary winding due to electromagnetic induction. The induced electromotive force will stimulate the flow of current in the secondary winding. These are the main parts of a power transformer:
The final build and configuration of the device depend on where it is to be used and under what conditions. It comes in many variants based on the need of the requirement; however, the most commonly used variants are the liquid-immersed ones which are mostly suited for factories and other high-power consumption units like power plants, Transmission networks and Substations.
With India outpacing the rest of the world, it is poised to be the manufacturing hub of the world giving a tight competition to China. We already have scores of companies setting up their production base in India on account of cheap and skilled labour. This, in turn, has spiked the need for a reliable source of power generation and distribution system which is of utmost importance if we are to run our factories and offices. Power transformers form an integral part of the system and carry the most important task of managing the power voltage before it is released to the end users.
